Kevin Montgomery, Casa Grande, Ariz. (September 27th, 2012) – Accomplished Dirt Modified racer, Mark Harrison, took the double checker flags in front of a capacity crowd on June 28, 2008 and as excited race fans rushed to congratulate the Coolidge, Arizona driver a somber tone came over the masses as they all wondered if this would be the final time they would ever witness this glory again. Eleven Mile Corner, commonly know as Central Arizona Raceway, would end its racing heritage and face the same dreadful fate as many other dirt tracks in America. Home to many racers in the Southwest, C.A.R would close its doors with little hope of ever reopening. That is until now! After four long years and a lot of high hopes, Central Arizona Raceway will thunder again! The Southwest Center of Speed will be the site of the 8th Annual Wes Hurst Memorial that will feature the best of the best IMCA Modified stars for the 2012 Finale this November 23rd thru the 25th. Joining the three day Thanksgiving celebration will be a star studded field of Pure Stocks and Super Stocks from every corner of the state. The combined partnership of Art Lacy and Benji Lyons will resurrect the hallowed grounds of Central Arizona Raceway and some of the long standing traditions that were made famous by the 3/8-mile clay oval. The racing tradition will go full speed starting with the Wes Hurst Memorial and then quickly launch into 2013 with one of the most popular traditions at C.A.R., the 7th Annual Wild West Shootout. The Wild West Shootout has quickly become a stomping ground for some of the best Super Late Model stars around the globe and the seven year tradition will continue as the Wild West Shootout kicks off on Friday January 4th and concludes with the $10,000 to win Bill Cheesebourg Memorial on January 13th. Six action filled days packed into a nine day period makes for a great winter vacation for some and a much needed break from the snow storms for others. Central Arizona Raceway is located at the Pinal County Fairgrounds just outside of Casa Grande, Arizona. The high banked, high speed clay oval will feature a full schedule in 2013 headlining ASCS Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Super Stocks, Pure Stocks and a host of other racing divisions in the Southwest.
Ryan Neuharth Tucson, Ariz (January 9, 2011) – It had been so long since New Richmond, WI driver Pat Doar sat in Victory Lane at the Wild West Shootout that the event technically didn’t even exist. USA Raceway’s mid-winter mini-series began in 2001 at Central Arizona Raceway in Casa Grande, and was known then as the Early Thaw. The 2003 edition saw Doar score two-wins and the series point’s championship, but the well had run dry until this sunny Tucson afternoon. After a less than stellar performance in the series opener, it appeared that Terry Phillips would not be denied in his quest too add to his status as the series all-time wins leader. Having blasted from his fifth starting spot to take the lead on lap two, the driver known as “TP” began to motor away as fierce battles erupted throughout the running order. Behind the top three Phillips’ teammate and opening night runner-up Jeremy Payne lead a group of contenders that included Clay Daly, Billy Moyer, Jr, Jimmy Mars and Bub McCool. That quintuplet seemingly changed positions with each flick of the steering wheel, only to have their fun interrupted by cautions for Brad Looney on lap seven and Ronnie Lee Hollingsworth on lap twelve. Running third during the races middle stages, Doar slotted behind race long leader Phillips and hometown favorite and USA Raceway Modified Champion RC Whitwell. With the top three blasting around the top-side of the immaculately prepared speedplant, Doar took advantage of lapped traffic to maneuver past Whitwell and quickly took the fight to Phillips. It was short lived as Phillips shoved the nose off of turn two, making hard contact with the backstretch concrete and handing the lead to Doar. In the scramble Payne edge by Whitwell for the runner-up spot with Moyer, Jr. up from ninth on lap fifteen to run fourth when the yellow would appear for top five runner Daly on lap twenty-two. Just like 24-hours earlier, a late race restart would tell a dramatic tail, but unlike night number one, Doar would have to survive not one, but three restarts in the races final seven laps. The first of which provided the most drama as Doar jumped the cushion in turn one allowing Whitwell to throw the slide job to momentary grab the point in turn two. Down low, Payne pulled even with Whitwell as Doar threaded the needle making it a three wide charge towards turn three. Driving in deeper than his counterparts, Doar eclipsed Payne before sliding in front of Whitwell to regain the lead he lost half a lap earlier. “I didn’t know where he was, I just drove it in there and it stuck,” Doar said from Element 7 Victory Lane. “He was out of sight and I hope it was clean.” Just as things appeared settled out front, all eyes shifted to hard charging Billy Moyer.
Just as things appeared settled out front, all eyes shifted to hard charging Billy Moyer. Having started twenty-first, the Hall of Fame driver cracked the top ten on lap twenty and ran seventh as the yellow appeared for David Breazeale on lap twenty-seven. While this restart was far less dramatic for Doar, for the second night in a row Payne and McCool found themselves occupying the same real estate, this time Payne ended up facing the wrong direction in turn one. The scuffle resulted in the races final restart, and again Doar didn’t bobble, slipping away from Whitwell and McCool as a pair of Moyer’s contested third. The elder Moyer would take the position from his son completing an impressive run in which he gained seventeen positions. Doar ran the last three circuits unmolested for this third career Wild West Shootout win.

After thanking his crew and sponsors from the winner circle, Doar was sure not to forget the most important person of them all. “My wife just got here today and I guess she’s good luck,” said Doar.

Ryan Neuharth Tucson, Ariz (January 8, 2011) Capitalizing on momentum from his first appearance at USA Raceway’s Wild West Shootout in 2010, Billy Moyer, Jr. used his patented line around the 3/8ths mile desert oval to steal the lead from Jeremy Payne on a late race restart and take his first career Wild West Shootout win. “It’s awesome to win out west like this, especially with all the Victory Circle people and Henderson Motorsports people here” Moyer, Jr. said from victory lane. Payne would hold a comfortable lead for 20 of the main events 30-laps as Moyer Jr., Frank Heckenast, Jr., Brad Looney, Bub McCool, Ronnie Lee Hollingsworth and Jimmy Mars all diced for position. McCool and Moyer Jr. would race side by side for several early laps while Mars and Hollingsworth made it two row of two from fourth on back. Hollingsworth was making the most noise early jumping from his eleventh starting spot to run seventh on lap five and fourth two circuits later. The early race storm was tempered when Dick Barton brought out the races first caution on lap 12, sapping Hollingsworth momentum and trapping the Northport, AL driver on the outside line during the restart. “Right Foot” Ronnie dropped back to eighth while Looney was also stumbling, losing power temporarily and falling to the tail before he could get back up to race pace. Looney’s power-failure bunched several drivers behind his slowing Victory Circle machine, leaving Heckenast, Jr. with no place to go as Moyer, Jr, Mars and McCool would all advance two places closer to the front. Heckenast’s misfortune turned into Moyer, Jr’s golden opportunity as he pulled to the outside of Payne on lap seventeen just as Rob Mayea would pull-up in turn one with a flat right rear, bringing out the yellow and setting the stage for a dramatic late race pass for the win. With Payne out front for the Delaware restart, Moyer, Jr. lined-up on the inside of row two. When Payne slide across the racetrack in turn one on the restart, it opened the door for Moyer Jr. to grab the top spot and set sail towards the checkered. “I went to the top a little too early” Moyer, Jr. said after the win. “That last restart fell just right, we lined up on the bottom and when (Payne) went high to try and block we drove right past.” Quickly extend his lead to a full straightway, Moyer, Jr. left Payne to fend off a hard charging Mars, McCool and a rebounding Hollingsworth. And what was maybe a hint at things to come, and unlike 2010, the second generation driver will happily be racing in all six Wild West Shootout events in 2011. “I graduated and will be here all week.” The rest of the field is officially on notice.
