Pelkey Pounces on ASCS Canyon Opportunity at USA!
Lonnie Wheatley, TUCSON, Ariz. (May 14, 2011) – Josh Pelkey was in the right place at the right time to notch his second Sunoco Fuel ASCS Canyon Region feature win of the year in Saturday night’s 30-lap main event atop the 3/8-mile USA Raceway clay oval.
Andrew Reinbold’s late race misfortune proved just enough for the past Arizona state Sprint Car champion to take top honors aboard Robbie Allen’s Advanced Engine-powered ABC Body Shop No. 12 entry.
Pelky assumed command in the final handful of circuits when Reinbold clipped in infield tire and suffered race-ending front end damage with a commanding lead. Pelkey went on to take the win over Nathan High, with two-time and defending series champion Charles Davis, Jr., claiming the show position after starting from the pole.
Current series points leader Jeremy Sherman climbed from 11th to fourth, with Matt Rossi rounding out the top five. Bruce St. James was sixth, with Ronnie Clark, Mike Martin, Chris Bonneau and Brian Hosford completing the top ten.
Pelkey and Reinbold topped heat race action.
AJ Huebner emerged the winner of a fierce battle between Brandon Farrington and Dusty Gauthier and captured his second consecutive X-Modified victory. Farrington, who led most of the way, traded slide jobs with Huebner in the closing laps and raced hard to the stripe to claim the runner spot while Gauthier claimed the show position in the 20-lap feature.
Josh Center was able to fend off a full field of ASCS2 Micro Sprints to claim his first ASCS2 victory. Center raced from the fourth position to hold off Cliff Cormany and Drew Holleran for the 20-lap victory.
Chief Brown was able to take advantage of a late race mistake by race leader Lt. Col Kapuscak aka “Pooch”. After having the race in the “Bag”, Pooch fell short of victory leaving the way for veteran Chiefs vs. Commanders competitor Brown as he claimed his first Armed Forces Appreciation victory.
